Healthy Babies!

This post isn’t a typical one, but it’s one that is important to me- one I’ve been wanting to write for a long time.  This post is definitely about Avery and Aurelia.  But it is also about other babies, other people.  It isn’t just about how cute and how precious they are.  It’s about how much mommies and daddies care about their babies, and how we as families and communities should care about each other’s babies, too.  This can be a controversial subject, but hey, this is OUR blog!  🙂

You’ve probably heard about the recent measles outbreak.  If you are reading from Spain, measles is sarampión, and the current outbreak began when a foreign visitor sick with the virus came to Disneyland (this visitor was NOT an undocumented illegal, but that’s for a different post!)

When we took Avery and Aurelia for their first pediatrician visit, our doctor told us that everyone in our immediate family should get the tdap vaccine, which protects us against whooping cough (and tetanus, so we should get these shots for ourselves anyway).  The pediatrician explained to us that whooping cough is deadly for babies and is most often transferred to them by parents and grandparents who may not know that they have it.  Here is a link to a story about such an occurrence- the mother thought she just had a cough, because it doesn’t affect adults as badly, generally.  The doctor thought she had allergies.  In fact, she had whooping cough and gave it to her newborn, who almost died.  Even if you have had whooping cough, even if you have been vaccinated, you need a booster every 5 years or so.  This baby spent a month in the hospital, and here is a quote from her mother: “The worst part is that you can’t really do anything once you have pertussis. They give you antibiotics just so that you’re not contagious, but you have to just ride it out. We’d stand near Caroline when she would cough and couldn’t catch her breath. It’s absolutely heart-breaking.” Here is a picture of her baby:

whooping cough

And here is a link to the article:

https://www.parentmap.com/article/two-local-mothers-whose-babies-nearly-died-of-whooping-cough-share-their-stories

Now here are my two babies on the day we brought them home from the hospital.  My daughter weighed less than 5 lbs at the time, my son about 5 1/2.  You can see how tiny and fragile they are. The pediatrician told us that a case of whooping cough could easily kill them, and would certainly land them in the hospital.

10447218_10152439382167279_1017412646_n 10443940_10152439382182279_30467491_n

Now, Josh and I made the very easy decision to ask all friends and family who would be in contact with them to get this important vaccine.  The timing was essential, as the smaller they are the more susceptible they are to getting sick.  We recognize that it isn’t right to force anyone to get a vaccine, or to do anything to themselves that they are not comfortable doing.  So our rule, finally, had to be get the shot if you’d like to be around our babies.  You don’t have to get the shot, but in that case, you can’t be around the babies until they are old enough to have had their full course of vaccinations.  We are their mommy and daddy, and ultimately we are the only ones who they can rely on to protect them.

We realize that our children will get sick.  They will get colds.  They will have to build up their immune systems, sometimes by getting viruses and fighting them off.  But things like measles and whooping cough are a different thing entirely.  Plus, we know there are children who cannot be vaccinated because their immune systems can’t handle it- maybe they are fighting cancer, maybe they have had a heart transplant (as is the case with one of our friend’s daughter), or maybe they have auto-immune problems.  I will always, always make sure that I am vaccinated so that I can protect those who are too little or whose immune systems are too weak to be vaccinated themselves.

I look at the faces of my healthy and happy children and cannot imagine making any other decision than the one we made at that first pediatrician’s visit.  Vaccines can be a touchy subject, and if you refuse to be vaccinated that is your choice, but our choice is that you cannot be around our children.  It is not something silly, it is not something frivolous, it could mean a world of difference to a little one.

We’ll leave you with the pictures of our healthy and happy babies!  Here’s to modern marvels- like vaccines, and people who develop them.  Here’s to cute babies everywhere 😉

First trip to Disneyland and 7 months old!

January has been fun-filled for us already!  Before we tell you about our adventures, we have to take a detour because Mommy had some fun dressing Aurelia up like some sort of Russian princess 🙂

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Too cute to resist!  Now back to business!  Before we left we saw our first snow- no time to play in it though, we had to get in our rental car and drive drive drive to escape the blizzard! (Not a real blizzard.  An Arizona blizzard, which is bad enough).

6

We had a fun time in San Diego, mainly looking at all the people, and having all the people look at us and tell us how adorable we are.

5

Mommy and Daddy thought it would be funny to give Avery a lemon and watch his face.  Mom and Dad were disappointed, however, when Avery quickly started sucking and thoroughly enjoying the lemon (notice his tongue all the way under the lemon wedge!)

4

Then it was time for our first time at Disneyland and California Adventure!  It is a special place for Mom and Dad- they had their honeymoon at Disneyland, and have always dreamed about the day when they could take their own kids to Disney!

Here we are looking cute in our first of many Disney outfits on our first morning at the park.  We wanted to be spruced up and prepared, Disney style!  We even wore our official “First Visit” pins!

Now we are in the stroller and all set to go!

1

Disneyland was still decorated for Christmas because they were celebrating the Three Kings, or Tres Reyes- just like in Spain!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

First order of business- ice cream.  We did not get any of this ice cream (that came later on the trip, when Mom and Dad caved and gave Avery a lick.  Which turned into another lick, and another, until Mommy had to throw it away because he would not stop…)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Our first ride was Alice in Wonderland.  This was also Mom’s first ride at Disneyland!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Daddy is having fun… Avery not so much.  We also went on the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Carribean… and fell asleep during the rides, or slept through them from beginning to end.  We are brave babies who are not easily impressed.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We got a family picture with the Genie- the Genie, however, was much more interested in flirting with the pretty girls just outside of the picture than in taking pictures with babies!  Also, Mom got her beloved Mickey pretzel.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

It was hot in Disneyland.  Like summer hot.  In January.  So we shared a Tigger hat.  We were so cute in it, and we made lots and lots of friends with the people in line.

Funny selfies.

And one “shellfie”.  Ha. Ha.  Get it?  Because we’re in a shell?  Little Mermaid ride?

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

It’s a Small World is beautiful for Christmas, and it was Aurelia’s favorite ride.  We also ride Dumbo for the first time- I think Mommy and Daddy had more fun than we did.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The castle was also very beautiful with all the lights!

Dia de Reyes festivities in California Adventure.

New Carsland- we were too tiny to go on the rides, but we could take a picture with Mater (okay, this is an edit. I realize now, upon closer inspection, that this is in no way Mater and is in fact just a tractor)!  Fun fact- the woman who took this had a little girl who is hidden behind Mater (tractor)- she refused to leave him so we could take a photo 😉

After a long ride home, we could finally relax and enjoy turning 7 months old!  As you can see, we are getting better at sitting, closer to crawling, and our personalities are really showing!

Our first Christmas

We had a great first Christmas!  Here are some highlights from Christmas Eve in our cute outfits.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We haven’t quite figured out how to open presents yet.  Aurelia’s theory is that you bite them or chew on them to get what’s inside.

We are in the full-swing of teething, and Avery has his bottom teeth now, too!  Mommy gave us carrots to gnaw on to help our teeth come through.  And who knew we would like pickles so much?

We have also been enjoying some first Christmas festivities!  Mommy and Daddy took us to the Gingerbread village, where we loved looking at the train- so much so that we came back with Mommy and Morgan.

35

We also went to the indoor light festival.

6553

We went to Prescott’s Acker music festival, and visited Daddy while he was working.  It was cold, and a little overwhelming.  We were happy to get home!

75

We decorated our own tree, and we even helped Mommy wrap some presents.

We are using one of our new Christmas presents early- a new stroller!  We LOVE it!

We are all prepared for Christmas now!  Here we are making some Christmas presents of our own.  We can’t wait to see what Santa brings us!

First Thanksgiving

Our first Thanksgiving!  We are now eating some big people foods, to celebrate our first Thanksgiving.  We tried avocado, bananas, and sweet potatoes and butternut squash.  We like all of it, except the avocado!  We’ll like it later…

Our California family came to visit.  We had lots of fun with Aunt MoMo and Aaron, and Avery loved his new buddy Uncle Joe.  Aurelia had fun with Uncle Tom.  And she loved her new BFF Brook.  All in all it was a great first Thanksgiving!  The biggest news is that the day before Thanksgiving we noticed that Aurelia has two teeth!!!

5 months!

We are 5 months old now!  As you can see, we are very wiggly and mommy has a hard time propping us up!  We are working on getting strong for sitting up!

5 MONTHS

Avery had his appointment in Phoenix to check for a hernia, while Omi watched Aurelia.  Good news- doctor didn’t find anything abnormal! And Avery was such a good boy!

Aurelia is still losing her socks, although her ankles are getting more and more chubby.

October and Halloween!

Here are the rest of our pictures from October, and our first Halloween!  Our biggest changes are becoming more mobile and cooing a lot!  We can also play with our toys better now.  We are getting better at sleeping through the night too!  Aurelia sleeps in the nursery now and often sleeps 10 to 11 hours!  Avery slept for 9 hours for the first time, too!  We are very good babies!

We are so beautiful.

7477

And we are very fashionable! (Thanks mom!)

We went on lots of hikes with mommy and daddy to enjoy the beautiful fall weather.  Avery even saw some ducks (he wasn’t impressed).

We had to go to the doctor’s for our 4 month shots 😦  We were in the fish room this time.  The doctor and the nurse are both nice ladies, though.

130131

We went to our friend Nico’s first birthday party.  It was a costume party (storybook theme) so we went as Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr. Suess.

5352

We had fun hanging out with our friends, even if the man in the yellow hat was kind of scary at first.  Then he read to us so he wasn’t so bad after all.

12

Lots and lots of people were there to hold us and cuddle with us.

124123

Our buddy Jacob was so cute!

We swatted at our first pinata!  And somehow Kelly always ends up with Aurelia 😉

Weeks 14 and 15 already!

These two weeks have gone quickly too!  Avery is now rolling over, making life very interesting for Mommy and Daddy!   Avery is really cooing a lot, and Aurelia is learning to blow raspberries.  We are changing so quickly!

We went to a birthday party and stayed up late- we had a great time and made lots of friends.
